Jubilee Theatre Announces Winning Script for New Works Festival!

Hi, Bryan Here…

After much anticipation, the winning play for Jubilee Theatre’s New Works Festival has been selected by Playwright in Residence, Celeste Bedford Walker.   The winning submission is Sweep N Slide by R. Lee Spivey, the story of a man finding himself in a place he didn’t think he would. Rollo, a janitor, is in a rut and ready for his life to change when he discovers his father was the pioneer of the Negro CurlingLeague. Hoping that the gift has passed on to him, he assembles a team to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Walker says she selected this piece from all the others because “it had an interesting concept and I enjoyed the flow of the language. There is an energy to the story that pulls you in.  Even reading the script is entertaining.”  She looks forward to hearing it come to life on Jubilee’s stage during the New Works Festival, June 15-17, 2012.

Artistic Director Tre Garrett says, “Of the 70-plus submissions we received this season, from all over the country – twenty-two states, five were selected as finalists.  From the top five, Ms. Walker chose  Sweep N Slide with no knowledge that the playwright, Rick Spivey, was a local Fort Worth writer (and actor, too). That speaks to the growing talent in our community.”

As part of the New Work Festival, Jubilee will present a staged reading of Sweep N Slide on Friday, June 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Jubilee Theatre, 506 Main Street.  This “Spotlight Reading” is open to the public on a pay-as-you-can basis, with a suggested minimum cash contribution of $5.

Garrett added, “We are proud to allow Rick to hear his work on our stage and hope the Fort Worth community will join us in supporting the work of aspiring local talent.”
